"Toward Light and Shade" honors the resilience and multiple life sustaining properties of trees. The branch is forged steel and the shelf mushroom shapes are river stones. This image was taken a year after installation as mosses and weather have begun to make the stones look as if they grew there.

We are drawn by this opportunity to give ancient, silent stones, wrought over millions of years, a special chance to ground viewers in their near immortal beauty and soulful presence.
"Returning"
Scientists tell us that the earth was formed by accretion of solar nebula. This means that a small mass with a slight gravitational force began collecting celestial debris until reaching the huge scale of our planet with all its elemental components. This piece is titled "Returning" because it suggests a reversal of that process where the massive boulder is diminishing in size as it starts to move back into the most ubiquitous astronomical form of motion--the spiral.

"Evolution"
We are fond of using the human scale because our works often have gestural as well as narrative associations. When several finished pieces stand together, they tend to suggest figures in the landscape, communicating with each other. This sculpture, titled "Evolution", includes a small living moss garden in the top bowl form.

Arches are an ancient, natural and architectural form that are both sculptural and functional. For us, they are a symbol of the essential benefit of creative partnership that we draw upon daily in our work. An arch demonstrates how two can come together and create a third element that neither individual could have done alone. In a landscape, they also define pathways, imply metaphoric portals and extend invitations to enter.

"Water and Time"
The search for compelling stones is an ongoing passion. This work veers off the course of primarily featuring weathered boulders to use large, fresh quarried granite columns. Many of these slabs have broad flat surfaces that inspire
carved and textured areas.

The summer of 2014 was an important time for the progress of our work in stone. One of the highlights was winning both first place and the people's choice award for "The Mentor" and "The Gift" at the annual Celebration of Sculpture competition in Lenoir, NC.

This was a unique project in which we were asked to create an interactive sculpture that young children could climb and play on using salvaged stones from a previously owned historic home. It was an exiting challenge for us to accomplish, as play is an important element in our own lives and creative flow. Here, we incorporated climbing holds, a lookout platform, a hiding place with a port hole and a bench for pause.

Here's a 2023 installation done for Otium Cellars, a winery in Loudoun County, Virginia, just outside Washington DC. Our intent was to create a centerpiece on a knoll above their vineyard that expressed a celebratory feeling as well as the sharing of love and experiences with friends, family and new acquaintances.

"Reaching Accord"

This project started as an idea from a client to reference an ancient ceremonial stone in Old Head, Ireland called "The Stone of Accord". Traditionally two parties would meet on a rugged knoll overlooking the Celtic Sea and clasp hands through a hole in the monolithic stone, solidifying a sacred bond or agreement.
